Increase confidence and courage through mindfulness.

In this mindful birthing course, learn the essentials for applying mindfulness meditation in labor. This is not your typical childbirth class. In addition to teaching you the facts about what to expect in labor, we will focus on preparing you for birth at the heart level and boosting your confidence as you embark on this next big chapter.

You’ll get practical, detailed guidance on how meditation can help you in pregnancy and labor. Research on nine-week mindful birthing classes shows participants had decreased anxiety, decreased postpartum depression, and increased likelihood of an unmedicated birth. This class is shorter and teaches many of the same mindfulness skills. I’ve taught mindfulness to pregnant women in a variety of contexts and have seen firsthand the benefits of shorter format mindfulness classes for childbirth.

The class is taught live online for four weeks. This means you get more support than you would in a one-day class or a self-paced video class. Pregnancy evolves, and new questions come up as time passes. We meet over four weeks so that you have time to digest information, apply the meditation practices to your life, and receive ongoing support. The course works very well as a complement to a childbirth basics course you may be taking at your hospital or birth center.

If you’ve always wanted to have a personal meditation practice, or could use support with one you already have, this class is for you. You’ll get support in building a meditation practice, which will continue to serve you long after the class is over.

The course consists of four weekly classes plus three sessions of a Pregnancy Circle. Pregnancy Circles are modeled on moon circles and traditional women’s circles, and are a chance for pregnant people to come together without partners, practice meditation, and connect with one another. Circles are what make the course an immersion because they give participants a powerful space to tune in to their inner wisdom and sustain their meditation practice.

Partners or doulas are encouraged to attend the weekly classes. The Circles are for pregnant people only. If you are unable to make it at the scheduled time, classes will be recorded. However, attending live is recommended! This class is for you regardless of where you plan to give birth, and it's for any type of pain management plan.

About the teacher

I’m Jane Riccobono. I’m a midwife, childbirth educator and meditation teacher. I’ve studied birth from many angles—as a doula, teacher, midwife, and researcher. I started my birth work as a doula at San Francisco General Hospital. I later became a Certified Nurse Midwife and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner through one of the top midwifery programs in the country, at the University of California, San Francisco. I’m also trained in two childbirth education modalities: Mindfulness Based Childbirth and Parenting (MBCP) and Centering Pregnancy.

My birth work evolved in tandem with my spiritual practice. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to develop my own spiritual path with a number of accomplished teachers in powerful practice settings. My journey has taken me to the San Francisco Zen Center, Spirit Rock Meditation Center, India, and to becoming a yoga teacher through Prema Yoga Brooklyn. My own spiritual path informs how I help you access the transformative and enlivening aspects of pregnancy and birth. Every person and every pregnancy is different. What does this pregnancy have to teach you?

Class Overview

Week 1

Mindful Birthing 101

Learn essential knowledge about why and how meditation reduces pain and fear in labor. Meet your fellow classmates who will accompany you during this period of learning and training.

Week 2

Being with the body

Connect with the body through movement and meditation. Learn about the physiology of birth and about the tools you don’t have to pack in your birth bag—the ones you carry within.

Week 3

Pain Practice

Do hands-on practice for labor. You’ll be guided in meditation while holding ice. Try out a variety of meditation techniques to practice working with strong physical sensation. In this class, we get down to business!

Week 4

Partner Practice

Many people say their biggest concern about labor is actually their partner. This class specifically addresses the role of the partner and/or doula in the birth room. Practice ways your partner, doula or other support person will assist you. Practice receiving support and communicating about what you need.
